Still Motion captures the quest of 5 graphic designers to the meaning of the uncommon material, stone, in the field of graphic design. Sagmeister & Walsh (US), Jonathan Barnbrook (UK), Ian Anderson (UK), Pedro Falcão (PT) and Jorge Silva (PT) give with 20 objects answer to the question: what can the material stone convey?
Still Motion is developed by the research platform experimentadesign and is curated by Guta Moura Guedes. It presents an unconventional approach to the use of stone: a 3D material interpreted by experts of mainly the 2D design field.
The designers received a briefing in which the meaning of stone in public and private spaces is explored. This by making use of the versatility of the material in terms of colour and texture. Whereas stone is inseparably linked with the field of architecture, art and even product design, its meaning in the graphic design field is still undiscovered.
The artistic freedom was paramount in this project by which the potential of this material is broadened. Still motion deepens the relation between material, design discipline and manufacturing industry/process.
On all levels the borders are sought. New perspectives and new methods arose in the process. The whole project is an initiative of Assimagra in partnership with experimentadesign.
