Rio+Design 2012

Brasile heats up Milan

The fascinating and warm atmosphere of Rio de Janeiro will be used as setting for innovative, eco-friendly, and cutting-edge products in exhibition during the Salone del Mobile

The carioca atmosphere will transform the address Via Tortona 20, in Milan, for the fourth edition of Rio+Design at Salone del Mobile. The creations by some of the most important designers from Rio de Janeiro will be showed in the famous Italian city – for the frst time at the trendy Tortona Zone – into a scenery that will recall the Marvelous Brazilian City. Promoted by the State Government of Rio de Janeiro, through the Secretary of Economic Development, Energy, Industry and Services (Sedeis), in partnership with Sebrae, the exhibition will include 30 objects and graphic design projects created by 23 professionals.

The curator of the exhibition is Guto Indio da Costa, who also signs the setting. The ambience will honor the natural scenic of Rio de Janeiro where the mountains meet the sea, besides the largest urban lake, the rich vegetation and many other details that characterize the carioca landscape. The space of 100m2 will accommodate creations with a strong expression and innovative attributes thanks to the materials research and the use of advanced techniques, which

do not leave out the ecological aspect. As the Marajó armchair, by Carlos Alcantarino (Estúdio Alcantarino), made with tubular metal, covered with reed, which explores the motives of the typical Marajoara ceramics from the State of Para, in Amazon Rainforest. Or the curious Tamanduá folding chair by Ado Azevedo (Ado Azevedo Design), that portrays the homonymous animal of the Brazilian Cerrado, is produced with certifed wood and built in the back with strips of leather fsh obtained in a sustainable manner.

In exhibition also the Pantosh armchair, designed by Leonardo Lattavo e Pedro Moog (Lattoog), from Viralata series of products originated by the crossing of different infuences, a reference to the melting pot of the country. The object is inspired by two classics: the Panton chair (Verner Panton, 1968) and Willow chair (Charles Renie Mackintosh, 1904). Impressive is the lamp 360 ° by Antonio Bernardo and Lumini that looks like a jewel, with its outstanding stainless

steel rings, whose shadows trace various images on the foor. Other interesting design objects are the wood stool Sergio with which Veronica Rodrigues honors her father, Sergio Rodrigues, one of the masters of modern furniture in Brazil. The high-tech refrigerator In.genius, designed by Guto Índio da Costa (Indio da Costa A.U.D.T.) and the stool Pão de Açúcar - that looks like the famous hill, produced in recycled plywood and covered with wood veneer pre-made - and the wallpapers that resemble Escher's engravings, both by Gilson Martins; the Acan armchair, by Mariana Betting Ferrarezi e Roberto Hercowitz (Em2 Design), built in fiberglass and jequitibá wood; and the chaise longue Lingua de Sogra, by Roberto Bernardo e Fernando Menezes (Tamanduá Bandeira Idéias), inspired by the whistle used in children’s parties.

Living a golden phase thanks to Brazil's economic growth and preparing to receive important events such as Rio+20 - the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development on June, Rio de Janeiro became a synonym of innovative production. In the opinion of the Superintendent Director of Sebrae RJ, Cezar Vasquez, one of the strengths of carioca design is its multifaceted character. “This exhibition takes to the Mecca of design the best of creativity in Rio. It is

a unique opportunity to show our products to the world”. According to the Subsecretary of Economic Development from the State of Rio, Dulce Angela Procopio, "The State Government of Rio de Janeiro is aware of the importance of design as a platform for the development economic, adding value to products and services through innovation. Rio+Design Milan 2011 consolidated the recognition of the quality of our designers and generate business opportunities. Rio+Design Milan 2012 introduces newness in products and setting, always emphasizing sustainability”.
