In his sculptural designs Frederik Molenschot captures the rhythm of urban structures and visualizes (future) networked cities and landscapes. Lost in Traffic represents elements we encounter daily. In these sculptures man has merged with the city and has become one with its surroundings.
Our daily environment is characterised by a maze of elements, a cacophony of structures, colours and sounds. The public space is constructed from elements that either repeat itself continuously or are unique and autonomous elements: parts that form a logical part of the greater whole or are arbitrarily placed within a composition. How do these surroundings unfold around us and what is our place within it?
Representing roundabouts, highways, sidewalks, traffic lights, art works (in public space), traffic signs, buildings and crush barriers, Lost in Traffic represents elements we encounter daily. In these sculptures man has merged with the city and has become one with its surroundings.
Age-old maps that led pilgrims to a holy place inspire the visual language of the works. In these maps signs and colours were the indicators for understanding and finding their way, with both a rational and subjective element to the mapping. In Lost in Traffic the bronze is the solid fundament and the colourful glass parts are the more fragile and changeable indicators. Order and chaos rule the concrete jungle.
