On the occasion of the 47th edition of the International Furniture Fair (Milan, 16th – 21st April 2008), Galleria Franco Toselli and Galleria Anna Patrassi present in their venues Toward New Worlds: Art Design 1918-1982, a collective exhibition curated by Nanda Vigo and Luca Tomìo about the ever-existing relations between art and design.
For six days only, from Monday April 14th to Monday April 21st, you will have the opportunity to see a selection of very rare works, in some cases never executed, belonging to private collections of Milan.
The show collects fifty works planned by the most important Italian designers, who have always favoured experimentation and research. A special occasion to see together works achieved in unique or very limited pieces, such as: Gio Ponti’s surreal ceramic ladies; a scarf by Lucio Fontana and a Spatial Concept in steel, which became a prototype of furniture accessory; Ettore Sottsass’s Land Caterpillar lamp, belonging to the series of the so-called Grey Furniture; Nanda Vigo’s Golden Gate lamp, which lights like a spacecraft; Leonardi&Stagi’s future feasible Swing; Joe Colombo’s modular Tube Chair; a prototype of chair by Gaetano Pesce; a modular lamp by Gianni Colombo; a prototype of “target-table” by Achille Castiglioni; the first “sculpture-lamp” created by the radical group Archizoom; a Studio 65 column, which, complete with capital, becomes a drawing room; the lamps of two pioneers of modern lighting, such as Gino Sarfatti and Angelo Lelli. All the works date from 1918 to 1982 and have in common, both in the project and in the technique, a strong innovative mark, which exceeds their pure functional aspect by turning them into art objects.
On the occasion of the show it will be possible to see an unpublished work by Nanda Vigo, titled HSH (Home Sweet Home), which was planned on purpose for Galleria Toselli.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue containing unpublished interviews with Giorgio Soavi and Nanda Vigo, complete with colour photos of all the works exposed; it also includes technical and scientific essays by Luca Tomìo, art historian and design expert, and Roberta Verteramo, restorer and researcher in the domain of contemporary art and design, specialized in the field of plastic and synthetic materials.
