Singapore designers dissolve boundaries with Blueprint 2008

- DesignSingapore Council brings fashion and product designers together in the first-ever collaborative showcase of Singapore’s design capabilities

 

DesignSingapore Council will present its inaugural cross-collaborative showcase between young, emerging Singapore fashion and product designers at the Salone Internazionale Del Mobile 2008 from 16 to 21 April 2008.

 

A studio under the DesignSingapore Studios programme, Blueprint 2008 brings product and fashion designers together to work collaboratively to dissolve the boundaries between design disciplines. This idea for a cross-collaborative presentation by the DesignSingapore Council was mooted by internationally recognised fashion consultant, Mr. Daniel Boey.

 

This collaborative project brings 13 designers, seven product designers and six fashion designers together. The designers have been divided into five groups, each with product and fashion design capabilities, they are:

Sharing of influences by the designers has resulted in the creation of multi-dimensional and transformational new designs with product designers drawing inspiration from the fashion designers’ collections. Arising from the collaboration, the fashion designers also leveraged on the competencies and strengths of the product designers to produce new works for their fashion showcase at the recently concluded Singapore Fashion Festival 2008. “This is one of the first large-scale projects where fashion and product designers have the opportunity to come together and share ideas. Instead of focusing on their expertise in a specific field, we have taken them out of their comfort zones and presented them with an opportunity to dissolve the barriers of design. By leveraging on their design competency and strength in different disciplines, a new creation is formed. This fusion of capabilities is a showcase of the talent that is uniquely Singapore. We hope that international buyers and industry players will also see the value of Singapore design through this presentation,” said Dr Milton Tan, Director of DesignSingapore Council.

 

With this in mind, the Council has lined up marketing opportunities to link participating designers with buyers. The intent is to garner business opportunities for Singapore designers and design from international markets.

 

The exhibition layout for the presentation in Milan was conceptualised by Lim Wei Ling, Singapore’s 2007 President’s Design Award recipient. As the visual communications designer for this project, Hanson Ho conceived the overall identity concept for Blueprint 2008 (see Appendix B for all the designers’ biographies).
