The exhibition is dedicated to the vivid creativity, expressivity and craftsmanship of the Brazilian Modernist Masters such as Sergio Rodrigues, the icon of Brazilian furniture design, inspirer and special guest of the event (www.sergiorodrigues.com.br).
It also includes masterpieces by the pioneer Joaquim Tenreiro and Scapinelli, among many others. The exhibit is a rare testimony of a historical moment in which Brazil produced extraordinary, and sometimes extravagant, pieces of furniture as a response to Europe’s rigorous approach to furniture design.
This is a unique opportunity to present the skills, capabilities and original mindset of Brazilian architects and designers in the post world war II period. New political and artistic visions were at the base of a unique creative movement which produced a distinctive style: inspired by its European roots, it integrated precious local materials, such as Jacaranda and used the capabilities of local craftsmen.
The exhibition highlights a “tropical” modernism, addressing the new cultural and intellectual elite of a dynamic, emerging country: Brazil. A movement whose numerous contributions to architecture and design were inspired by the Californian “Case Studies” houses and the modern Movement which proposed innovative, architectural and living models by masters such as Niemeyer and Costa. This new spatial approach required a totally new type of furniture in line with the rapidly changing society, a new concept of “wellbeing“ and “contemporary living” in Brazil.
The curators, Cinzia Ferrara, architect and lighting designer, and Monika Unger, architect and modernist furniture expert, both with a passion for European furniture design, wish to share with the vast public of the “Fuori Salone” this unique page of Brazilian design which only a very small and knowledgeable group of experts are today familiar with. The objective is to show the universal importance and the vision of Brazilian Modernism through the work of pioneers such as Tenreiro and masters such as Rodrigues and Scapinelli.
