The “chamber of wonders”
A concept by architect Ferruccio Laviani for Barovier&Toso’s new Milan showroom
arovier&Toso is opening a new showroom at number 5, via Durini in Milan on the occasion of the 2010 Salone del Mobile exhibition. It is a gem of an establishment with its compact size, designed by architect Ferruccio Laviani not so much as a place strictly dedicated solely to sales but rather as a small treasure chest which will host a limited number of products at one time, highlighting them in a transformable semi-circular setting in the large window with decor made up entirely of mirrors.
Designed to welcome Barovier&Toso’s sophisticated clientele as well as professionals and lovers of beauty, the store will frequently change its fittings over the course of the year.
“The walls covered in mirrors amplify the dimensions and echo the objects on display,” explains the architect Laviani, “causing the architecture of the building to disappear, remaining on view only in the black Seminato marble (inherited from a historic lakeside tradition) and the staircase- again in black marble- which leads to the mezzanine. All of this is “sealed” by a transparent glass screen which allows the space and its volume to be seen in its entirety. I would define the Barovier&Toso area as a synthesis between a Wunderkammer and a magic lantern in which fittings and installations of amazing, fantastic objects follow one after the other, like the blown glass creations produced by the company: I wanted them to remain the undisputed protagonists of the store.”
