“Smart-ologic Corian® Living” is the name ofthe innovative interior design project that DuPont™ Corian® and Karim Rashid are proposing in April 2010 at the Milan week of design: a smart and environmentally sustainable home concept designed by Karim Rashid, based on the superior design versatility and on the renowned sensorial qualities of DuPont™ Corian® advanced surfacing material.

“Smart-ologic Corian® Living” will also feature (a worldwide first) “futuristic types” of DuPont™ Corian® made with environmentally sustainable bio-sourced components and with recycled materials and will display other high-tech DuPont products able to decrease the environmental imprint of interior design, architectural and building solutions while delivering superior aesthetical and technical quality.

All the areas of the home – kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room, garden - will be creatively interpreted by Karim Rashid (see his portrait above on the left, photo by Roman Leo for Karim Rashid Inc.) and populated by a variety of smart home design solutions where DuPont™ Corian® will be the key player and the connecting element.

The materials, products and solutions from DuPont that will be used for “Smart-ologic Corian® Living” project designed by Karim Rashid are:

1) (worldwide first) futuristic types of DuPont™ Corian® advanced surfacing material made with environmentally sustainable bio-sourced components and with recycled content;

2) selected fascinating colours from the current range of DuPont™ Corian® (featuring also colours from the 2010 series of DuPont™ Corian® including content based on recycled materials);

3) (worldwide first) a futuristic type of DuPont™ Zodiaq® quartz surface incorporating environmentally sustainable bio-sourced components;

4) selected fascinating colours from the current range of DuPont™ Zodiaq®;

5) DuPont™ Energain® panels for energy consumption reduction (with an embedded phase change material based on environmentally sustainable bio-sourced ingredients, a further innovation);

6) DuPont building integrated photovoltaic modules;

7) DuPont™ Tyvek® non-woven membranes.

The world-class design genius of Karim Rashid is complemented in this project by the world-class skills of DuPont in the design of materials. Exploiting their exceptional knowhow in materials science, biology, chemistry and manufacturing technologies, DuPont science and technology teams have designed and engineered futuristic types of DuPont™ Corian® advanced surfacing material made with environmentally sustainable bio-sourced components and with recycled content. In addition, they have designed a new type of DuPont™ Zodiaq® quartz surface and of DuPont™ Energain® phase change material including environmentally sustainable bio-sourced ingredients. DuPont sees these as possible options to meet the emerging technical and environmental challenges that companies and professionals of interior design, architecture and building will have to face.

The project manager of “Smart-ologic Corian® Living” exhibition is architect Massimo Fucci, international consultant and interface with the design world for DuPont Surfaces business. 

Karim Rashid (www.karimrashid.com) – Karim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation. Over 3000 designs in production, over 300 awards and working in over 35 countries attest to Karim’s legend of design. His award winning designs include democratic objects such as the ubiquitous Garbo waste can and Oh Chair for Umbra, interiors such as the Morimoto restaurant, Philadelphia and Semiramis hotel, Athens.

Karim Rashid collaborated with clients to create democratic design for Method and Dirt Devil, furniture for Artemide and Magis, brand identity for Citibank and Hyundai, high tech products for LaCie and Samsung, and luxury goods for Veuve Clicquot and Swarovski, to name a few.
