TOSHIYUKI KITA. TIMELESS FUTURE.

In the last 50 years, “design” has become a term more and more common all over the world and progressively evolved indicating an essential aspect of the mankind’s future. Today it embraces a multiplicity of factors: from functionality and safety to the respect for the environment, economy, industry, social responsibility and communication. The designer’s challenge is to know how to coordinate all these different elements in a well balanced way.

In his thousands-year history, mankind has never been witness to such a rapid changing age, as ours. We are today able to think about our future in a more conscious and aware way, acting as a barometer of what is going to happen, not only in the matter of the next technological development but also in regard to the old generations’ ancient wisdom about the everyday living and the sense of balance with nature.

Timeless Future is an exhibition of works come up together over the decades as a Toshiyuki Kita’s answer to the interrogatives of the future.

THE EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE AT: LA TRIENNALE DI MILANO – VIA ALEMAGNA 6 MILAN
OPENING HOURS: APRIL 14 – 19 2010 FROM 10.30 A.M TO 10.00 P.M.

PRODUCTS

WINK, 1980

Cassina, Italy
Permanent collection of Museum of Modern Art, New York
Centre Pompidou, Paris
Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein - Museum für Kunst and Gewerbe, Hamburg

Stretch your legs and lie down or sit. The headrest can be moved freely, and the colored covers on each part can be switched as easily as changing clothing and washed at home, lending this piece a high degree of originality.

CEREMONY SPACE, 1986

Ohmukai-Koshudo, Japan

Exhibited in 1987 as an invitation piece at the 10th anniversary of Centre Pompidou in Paris. This two-mat space is made from lacquered wood pillars and tatami mats, meaning it is constructed entirely of plants. Displayed as a memory of the culture of tatami and culture of the heart, it is a 1.8 cubic meter universe unto itself. Sitting inside it is somehow calming and allows the viewer to keenly experience a meditative space.

LED WASHI LAMP, 2006

Installation made of LED and traditional Washi paper

Today LED lighting has become very common.
In this lamp, technology joins to natural materials and traditional craftsmanship: as combined with Washi Japanese paper, cool LED light becomes warm and very similar to the sun.
In this way we can save energy and resources for the future with a pleasant and comfortable lighting.

SARUYAMA, 1967

Moroso, Italy

The latent animal instinct and playfulness that humans possess is set free in a small space. These sofas were designed based on the thinking that, even if living environments change, basic human movements such as sitting and lying down remain unchanged. It's possible to sit, lie down, find one's own place, and climb. These pieces have been named after SARUYAMA (Monkey Mountain), which they resemble, and are divided into three unchangeable shapes but can be put together to form one large round sofa.

KICK, 1983

Cassina, Italy

Permanent collection of Museum of Modern Art, New York

Museum für Kunst and Gewerbe, Hamburg

A table that runs to you when you whistle - that was the image in the Kita’s mind when he designed this low table. KICK was designed to go with the WINK chair. It is a work based on Toshiyuki Kita’s memories, having conceived the idea for the table at the development office of Cassina, made a full-scale freehand drawing there and then started on the prototype right away. The work piece was selected as a collection piece by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) when released. The tabletop can be moved up and down or rotated as required. Thanks to its shape and function, the table was born with an expressive look made from an inorganic collection of materials.

MULTI LINGUAL CHAIR, 1992

Seville Expo
Permanent collection of Museum of Modern Art, New York
Centre Pompidou, Paris

A chair designed for the Seville Expo '92 Japanese Pavilion. The high-tech technology available at that time was used to create an organic form, with the intent of expressing both a futuristic feeling and a sense of intimacy. This work was consciously designed with the understanding that the Expo is a place to raise suggestions for the near future and to express what modern Japan is about.

WAKAMARU, 2002

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan

An electronic device for security and the elderly, WAKAMARU is a brand new household use cognizant robot and features movement and voice recognition, family face recognition, and Internet services. Concept work was begun to respond to the hopes of makers who have started dealing with the products of the near future.
