SEVES GLASSBLOCK AT SALONE DEL MOBILE 2010

Showroom Seves glassblock, Triennale Design Museum, Interni Think Tank, Brian&Barry Windows

Linear and pure, high-impact, decorative and functional, the glass block by Seves glassblock confirms its leading role in the most important annual event dedicated to design, the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

This ever-evolving furnishing element, which is capable of responding promptly to the evolution of contemporary taste, will be presented in four different points of the city from April 14 to 19 to showcase its numerous potential possibilities: focusing on its sustainable and eco-friendly properties, its technological and formal content, its lighting and poetic significance in architecture, and finally on its potential as an interior design object.

In a virtual catwalk that begins in the Seves glassblock showroom situated in Via Lodovico il Moro 25/27, Milan, and ends in the Triennale Design Museum, passing through the Interni Think Tank event at the University of Milan and the Brian&Barry shop windows in Via Durini, the multi-faceted Seves glass block stars in a multidisciplinary plot revolving around fashion, design, architecture and environment.

2010 is the year of innovation and eco-sustainability for Seves glassblock.

Always attentive to environmental protection and energy saving, the world leader in the production of glass blocks launches three new architectural products in sustainable and eco-friendly glass at the Salone del Mobile.

New and important developments in the production revolutionise from a "green" perspective not only the aesthetic quality, but also the properties of the traditional glass block, which are on exhibit at Seves glassblock’s Milan showroom in Via Lodovico il Moro 25/27. These innovations include: the new UV Reflector glass block that provides protection from UV solar rays, Energy Saving technology for better heat control in winter and summer, and the Q30 Diamante glass block with irregular protruding shape that offers captivating light and shade effects.

Three new achievements for the glass block: the very nature of the material is eco-friendly because it is made from natural raw materials using a production process with low environmental impact where the scraps are completely reintroduced into the next cycle, and the product is completely recyclable at the end of its use.

It is a real circuit that wanders freely in the airy and multi-faceted exhibiting space - to discover the rich Seves glassblock catalogue, which includes among others, the brightly coloured glass blocks of the Mendini Collection, the blocks from the Ginza Collection, the Trapezoidal and Doric collections coming from the Tailor Made service offered to architects and the hi-tech products from the Technology Line – where hundreds of Pegasus Q19 metallised blocks are lined up in succession on the ground like 19 x 19 cm dominos. The pride and joy of the Design range by Seves glassblock, this glass block embodies the contemporary image of the material:  the transparency coming from the high quality raw materials, the protruding wings that allow reducing the gap between each block to just 2 mm, and the metallised finishing, which gives the reflection a special silvery aspect to create captivating lighting effects.

The itinerary is only interrupted in a few points to draw attention to three new products: the UV Reflector block which stands out for its mirrored faces, guaranteeing protection against UV rays; the Q30 Diamante block with its asymmetrical perimeter, which after the Q30 Trapezoidal and Q30 Doric blocks represent the last frontier in Seves’ ability to model the volume of its glass blocks at will in order to satisfy the desires of the designers. Finally, the Energy Saving block, which is identical in appearance to a standard Pegasus, but with the introduction of a low-emissivity glass plate between the two shells of the glass block and the insertion of Argon gas at a controlled pressure. These two innovations allow halving the thermal transmittance value of a classic block.

Explanatory panels on the sides and in the window recount in detail the characteristics and properties of the new blocks, Q30 Diamante and UV Reflector, while the middle of the showroom accommodates two juxtaposed installations that highlight the surface effects and light and shade effects of the new wall blocks.

High quality standards, eco-friendly solutions and a very contemporary look: these are the cards played by Seves this year to renew the materials and to candidate itself as a new protagonist for future scenarios.

UV Reflector glass block

A seductive look in silvery colours for a new glass block that protects against UV rays.

In fact, the new UV Reflector glass block is distinguished by mirrored surfaces and metallic reflections, which significantly reduce the transmission of the ultraviolet component of light (UV rays) thanks to the application of a zirconium oxide film on the glass surface.

A standard block allows 55.6% of UV rays to pass, while the presence of the zirconium oxide coating on one side of the block reduces the passage of light by 8% to arrive at a percentage of 1.1% in case of coating on both sides. This final effect provides greater visual wellbeing and minimal daily exposure to ultraviolet rays, which is ideal for contemporary settings characterised by futurist glamour.

Clear Q19 T UV Reflector.

Size: 19 x 19 x 8cm.

Glass design: smooth.

Colours: clear.

Finish: transparent.

Weight: 2.3kg.

Installation methods: traditional installation with cement mortar; dry laying.

Energy Saving glass block

Transparency and thermal insulation together. This is possible with the new ENERGY SAVING technology patented by Seves glassblock, which by introducing a low-emissivity glass plate between the two shells of the glass block and by inserting  Argon gas at a controlled pressure, halves the thermal transmittance value of the classic block (from U=2.8 W/m² K to 1.5 W/m² K for a glass block in the Pegasus 19x19x8cm format).

The low-emissivity glass plate, invisible to the naked eye, modifies the reflective properties and solar energy transmission of the glass without affecting its mechanical, chemical and aesthetic characteristics, improving heat retention inside the buildings in winter and outside the buildings in summer, and offering a new solution to designers who are more sensitive to sustainability requirements.

Q30 Diamante glass block

With a asymmetrical pyramid shape evoking illustrious historical precedents - such as the facades of Palazzo dei Diamanti of Ferrara or Palazzo Strozzi of Florence - the Q30 Diamante glass black comes from the collaboration between Seves glassblock and 5+1AA as part of the tailor-made service dedicated to architects and designers.

The result of a sensual dialogue with the material, Q30 Diamante was sought-after by designers as a new way to define recurring themes in their work: the interaction with the natural light and the nocturnal metamorphosis, the relationship between the interior and exterior, the search for beauty as a form of dialogue and wonder.

Due to the high level of difficulty in the semi-handcrafted production, the product is manufactured at the Seves production site of Turin, where high-quality and technological know-how are key and winning factors, according to the new Energy Saving technology for a more accurate control of the thermal dispersions.

SOSPESI TRA TERRA E CIELO

project by 5+1AA Alfonso Femia Gianluca Peluffo

Interni Think Tank, University of Milan, Via Festa del Perdono 7, 20122 Milan.

From Tuesday 13 to Sunday 18 April, 10:00am to 12:00am.

From Monday 19 to Sunday 25 April, 10:00am to 8:00pm.

Press conference: Tuesday 13 April 2010 at 2:30pm at the University of Milan, Aula Magna.

Opening Party: Wednesday 14 April 2010 from 8:00pm onwards at the University of Milan.

Less than two months from the official public presentation at the cycle of meetings “Architecture and Transparency” in the Seves glassblock showroom of Milan, the Seves Q30 Diamante glass block is the star of the “Sospesi Tra Terra e Cielo” installation designed by 5+1AA Alfonso Femia Gianluca Peluffo in the open gallery of the Design Islands, as part of the INTERNI THINK TANK events held in the Courtyards of the University of Milan.

On the ground, a suspended and backlit platform leads the observer to a “carpet of diamonds” made with the special glass blocks conceived from the collaboration between designers and Seves as part of the tailor-made service offered to architects. This platform is topped by a ceiling of cascading polygonal-shaped light fixtures.

The result is a space suspended and contrasting with the physical dimension of the context and the rarefaction of the artificial light: one moment it is imprisoned inside the "pyramid-shaped glass carpet" and the next it is enclosed in the variable sequence of suspended rings. The only colours are those of a sofa made up of modules of different heights and colours, which were added to conclude the visual perspective.

This participation gives Seves glassblock the opportunity to consolidate the partnership with one of the most interesting architectural firms on the current scene, focusing on the lighting value and poetic content inherent in a construction element as demonstrated by its use in two ongoing projects by 5+1AA Alfonso Femia Gianluca Peluffo for the Horizontal Tower at the Milano Rho Fair and the expansion of the IULM in Milan.

QUALI COSE SIAMO. TRIENNALE DESIGN MUSEUM, THIRD INTERPRETATION.

Director: Silvana Annicchiarico. Scientific management: Alessandro Mendini. Project manager: Pierre Charpin. Graphics: Jean-Baptiste Parré. Electa Catalogue.

Triennale Design Museum, Via Alemagna 6, 20121 Milan, Tel. +39 02-724341, www.triennaledesignmuseum.it

Q42, the world’s largest glass block designed by Seves glassblock in collaboration with Renzo Piano for the Maison Hermès of Tokyo, and one of the objects selected by the design guru Alessandro Mendini for the annual review of the Triennale Design Museum, open to the public from 27 March 2010.

The curatorial hypothesis of the third interpretation of this dynamic museum, capable of continually renewing itself and offering visitors’ eyes new and different perspectives and itineraries, is based on the fact that Italy has a large and infinite parallel world to that of institutional design, which is an invisible and unorthodox design to be discovered.

Single objects, placed side by side, create a network of relationships and references, a varied landscape capable of provoking imbalances and displacements, but rich of emotion and extravaganza. In this sense, the Q42 glass block could not be left out because its extraordinary size of 42.8 x 42.8 x 12cm makes it a prized construction element and the beautiful mirror effect gives it an extremely shiny silvery aspect.

This innovative glass block is a tangible demonstration of Seves glassblock’s ability to innovate the material, pushing it beyond the traditional uses and formats. Characterised by sides of 42.8 cm, a thickness of 12 cm and weight of 16 kilograms, it has one smooth face and one wavy face with a ripple effect resembling water being caressed by the wind. The special design of the glass is further enhanced by the refraction of sunlight, accentuated by the “mirror” treatment applied to the block through a silvering process of the surfaces along its entire thickness. To allow the lodging inside the metallic support structure, without losing the sense of continuity between each block, the block is enclosed by so-called "wings" along all the borders, which protrude 25 mm from the section.

The combination of these properties – the special size, combined with the difference between the inner and outer surfaces of each block, and the mirroring process and external wings - have given the facade of the Maison Hermes, one of the most famous works of the Italian archistar, a unique silvery mirrored reflection and the optical elimination of the gap between the blocks. The overall innovative effect is of a continuous and homogeneous “all-glass” surface, a magical lantern that even today, more than 10 years after the inauguration of the building, continues to captivate its observers.

BRIAN&BARRY NEW WINDOWS

Brian&Barry, via Durini 28, 20122 Milan, Tel. +39 02 76005582, www.brianebarry.it

The exuberant collaboration between Seves glassblock and the Brian&Barry fashion label continues.

Due to its strong visual impact, a few months ago the Seves glassblock showroom in Via Lodovico il Moro 25/27, Milan, was chosen as the venue to accommodate the photographs from the new Brian&Barry Spring/Summer Catalogue in which young models dynamically fling themselves onto seabeds and glass floors ranging from pure colours to the purity of neutral colours. The leading manufacturer of glass blocks for interior design and architecture was called to personalise the windows of the large store in Via Durini 28 for the entire week of the Salone del Mobile.

Three of the five windows of the Women’s space in Via Borgogna were, in fact, personalised by bright glass blocks from the Mendini Collection: at the extremities are arranged two right-angled walls, the first in shades of green with malachite, beryl, white 30% and neutral coloured block, the second wall in shades spanning between fuchsia and blue with sapphire, coral, white 30% and neutral coloured blocks. The central window, instead, holds three large multi-coloured panels made with amethyst, sapphire, malachite, citrine, amber, agate, white 30%, and black 100% coloured blocks to create a three-dimensional and dynamic stage perfect for showcasing the most original and fashionable clothes.

The sixteen ultra-contemporary nuances of the Mendini Collection are also arranged in the window on Via Durini. They are distributed on shelves illuminated from above, positioned in three niches, while in the middle rise two ground totems consisting respectively of 5 and 7 elements from the Q30 Dorico Metallised range freely placed one on top of each other, topped by a Q33 block imprinted with the Seves glassblock logo.

Glass blocks in different shapes, colours and sizes are, therefore, proposed individually as decor objects or mounted on walls to personalise in the name of design the windows of one of the most popular and crowded stores in the centre of Milan during the most creative week of the year, developing a dialogue with the new women’s, classic and sports collections.
