On the occasion of the Salone del Mobile 2010, in its historical gallery space in the center of Milan, L’ARCHIVOLTO LIBRERIA GALLERIA will host an exhibition by ILEX PHOTO, the first virtual photography gallery created with the desire to bring contemporary fine art photography to as wide a range of people as possible.

Fine art photography is a work of poetry. A fragment of contemporary realty captured by the artist - images that can both provoke our emotions and stimulate our mind.

The objective of ILEX PHOTO is to offer fine art photography to as wide a public as possible. A work of our times to be enjoyed and accessible to collectors and lovers of design and the visual arts alike. An idea shared by some of the most interesting internationally acclaimed photographers who, exclusively for Ilex, accepted to increase the editions of a selection of their images, enabling a larger public the opportunity to invest in a work of art.

ILEX PHOTO presents an exclusive collection of fine art photographs from the end of the Nineteenth century through today. The exhibition Walk the Stones is a journey along time and along the streets of Rome.

From the vintage images of Studio Vasari, a prolific family of photographers active in Rome since the second half of the XIX century, to the snapshots of two of the most renowned Roman contemporary photographers, Angelo Turetta and Francesco Zizola.

Twenty photographic works, the result of a studied selection, unveil the hidden face of the city, through its monuments and daily life, revealing a harmony which is sublime.

The unpublished photographs by Francesco Zizola and Angelo Turetta, specifically thought of for the new ILEX collection, alternate with the historical images of Studio Vasari. Light and shadows, rendered in an exclusive black and white with unexpected hints of color, emphasize the rationalist lines of the EUR architecture, the white Carrara marble of the Cestia Pyramid and the great arcades of the new Regina Margherita bridge.

The Photographers

Studio Vasari. From the second half of the Nineteenth century the activity of Vasari Photographic Studio, founded by Cesare and his wife in 1870, constitute a precious contribution to the documentation of the Italian artistic scenario and, in general, to the iconographic memory of Italy. Five generations of photographers have duly reported the fundamental moments of the transformations of the urban landscape of Rome. Well known are the views of “Roma Capitale”, via Nazionale, Piazza dell’Esedra, the demolition and construction sites during the Fascist period, and the reconstruction after the war from the Termini train station to the Olympic works in 1960. Studio Vasari is also noted for its portraits of the work of the city’s main artists and architects and the transformations of churches and museums throughout the city’s last hundred years of history. This important documentary heritage is currently divided in three separate archives – the Calcografia (the National Institute for Graphics), the Study Center and Archive of Communication of the University of Parma and the private archive of Studio Vasari.

Angelo Turetta (1955) has been photographing the country’s art, cultural and intellectual scene for the past three decades. At the same time, he has kept a steady eye on Rome, doggedly documenting the city’s changes throughout the years – capturing both the high and the low brow. Recognition for Turetta’s photographs include a thirteen-year consecutive 1st place in the Italian Set Photographer’s Award (1996 – 2006) and a World Press Photo Award (2001).

Francesco Zizola (1962) was born in Rome, and studied anthropology. Intensely human and soulful, his images pull at our emotions. Since 1986 his pictures appear internationally in leading magazines. Francesco Zizola has received eight World Press Photo awards, including World Press Photo of the Year in 1996 for his photograph documenting the tragedy of land mines in Angola and four Pictures of the Year Award.

ILEX is proud to present Findings, a conceptual series created specifically for the collection Walk the Stones.
