“Everyone knows that Romeo is a true genius.
I always knew it. And I took a gamble when I asked him to design 8 large carpets made from wild silk: the absolute material, with the master of masters.
Only he could put together extraordinarily intense colours, without making the result appear too bold. The aim was to create carpets that would be as contemporary as could be conceived, but at the same time eternal.”
This is how Carrieri, the soul of Altai, describes the origin of this project, which will be unveiled for the first time globally on the 14th April in Milan during the 2010 Salone del Mobile.
For the first time, apart from the marvellous kilim designed for Christopher Farr in
A unique feature: to avoid falsifications a platinum knot will be inserted amongst the 1,260,000 knots that are on average present on each carpet. The position of these platinum knots will only be made known to the purchasers and will be deposited with a notary. It is perhaps an unnecessary precaution given the incredible difficulty of making these carpets and the rarity of the Uzbek wild silk. For 2,000 years it has been considered the finest in the world and can now only be found in the most remote valleys of the central Asian region.
Only Altai has access to these ancient manual techniques and materials, thanks to two decades spent within this region searching for the last ancient nomadic carpets. As a result of this research Altai boats 16 of the major collections of unusual primitive carpets that are present in the world today.
