PRIMA AV

design Paolo Nava and Fabio Casiraghi

PRIMA “avant-garde” continues its own journey, an exploration of the relationship between kitchen and living area, the continuous interlacing of functions, rituals and daily needs.
Time captivates moments spent in private, with the family or extended family, in a “continuum of interaction. Dialogue could define a “Spatial Presence”, well established within an open home that is no longer afraid of an informal outlook, where the perception of space is changing, no longer an extravagance permitted only to a few.

PRIMA AV once again returns to its roots, which in 1992 so deeply transformed the international kitchen system, interpreting once more this relationship between operational and functional space and the area set aside for dialogue and communication, confirming the changes and respecting its own values at the same time.

The kitchen moves away from the walls, opening itself up to the other rooms producing a new relationship with space. From the bottom to the top, a new architecture containing and exhibiting, highlights a virtual boundary that hides or reveals what is happening beyond.
The aerial nature of wall units is confirmed by having them drop from the ceiling in non-structured manner and by being accessible on two sides, symmetrically or asymmetrically, and they can be dynamically changed thanks to the system of sliding doors.

The wall units confirm this dual outlook where the front merges with the back.

The new perimeter of the worktops seems to accentuate the rising horizontal surfaces and the vertical surfaces of the base units, giving weightlessness and emphasizing the aesthetics of the new, thicker doors.

The “push-up” handles with their formal rigidity appear to be totally integrated with the vertical surfaces, reacting when touched in order to offer a tangible access, without totally disappearing. A new steel handle is another proposal for a timeless environment, elegant and characteristic, where its joint detail enhances the material.

A new family of Binova electrical appliances defines the cooking area and worktops in a coordinated way, exploring different activities involving the use of water, from preparation and transformation of food to different cooking cultures and technologies, becoming an organized, changeable and personal space. The new extractor hoods are camouflaged and integrated or become an explicit focal point.

New finishes for horizontal surfaces and vertical surfaces such as doors offer new aesthetic combinations. Single elements find their unanimity using “ tone sur tone” finishes. The use of black and white guides the interpretation of contents of the project but the chromatic homogeneity reveals the variation in materials and surfaces.

PRIMA AV

A voyage of discovery inside the new elements of Prima AV

WALL UNITS
The new ceiling wall units define a non-structured container unit,  suspended by a rail system both for the island and wall options. Special wood and lacquer shelves merge with the essential vertical bearing structure in stainless steel.
The doors, descending from the ceiling, become sliding screens and confirm this dual outlook where the front merges with the back. This movement creates new dynamic frontiers, mobile curtains generate a new revealing architecture of enclosed space. The aerial nature of wall units is confirmed by having them drop from the ceiling and by being accessible on two sides, symmetrically or asymmetrically, and they can be dynamically changed thanks to the system of sliding doors.
The aerial body of the rail system diffuses light and creates the environment , while the wall units integrated above the worktop become an accurate working tool.

The framed wall unit is renewed, preserving the classic value of solid wood strips, where the restyling of the joints and the combination of new finishes for glass give it a new, contemporary appearance.

WORKTOPS AND ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
The new perimeter of the worktops accentuates the rising horizontal surfaces from the vertical surfaces of the base units, offering weightlessness and emphasizing the aesthetic value of the new doors 23mm thick,
Not really a channel but a groove, the new profile of the top unites the entire work surface and customises the finishes, coordinating or emphasizing the materials selected for the worktops.

A new range of exclusive Binova electrical appliances defines in a coordinated way the cooking area and worktops. The new series of Binova sinks in stainless steel is dedicated to activities involving the use of water, designed to be flush mounted into the top or completely welded onto the steel tops. Preparing and transforming food have become specialized actions from washing to cooking; that is why a new series of specific accessories have been created, located in the groove between the two levels of Binova sinks or as individual domino elements for a totally flush look. Lastly, a strong personal design defines the new gas hob, cast-iron rings and knobs as main details. Different cultures and cooking technologies (gas, induction, immersion sinks, teppan yaki, wok, etc.) combine to offer sophisticated and international tools where one’s own creative culinary skills are the only component to be added. The new extractor hoods are increasingly camouflaged and integrated or are made into an explicit focal point.

A NEW PATENTED, FLUSH-MOUNTED SYSTEM
A new important result of Binova research and experience in manufacturing is the flush-mounted unit which exhibits a new patented system of flush-mounting where the top can be removed for maintenance/substitution of electrical appliances. Technical performance as well as the aesthetic characteristics are extraordinary.

THE BASE UNITS
Front, back, side are now outdated definitions for a composition designed in the round, where every surface has potentially the same importance. The back of an island can be the front of a living area, that is why a new open element in the base offers space to the living area, relating itself to the environment beyond the kitchen.

THE WALL UNITS AND HANDLES
The handles merge with the doors and the doors create handles, seeking formal rigidity and total integration in order to disappear completely into the vertical surfaces. PushUp is both a handle and a door, there are no boundaries, the finishes coordinate, and then react when touched in order to offer a tangible access, merging again into to the surface of the door but without disappearing completely.
.
The merger of Push-up and the Traccia door is revealing, the characteristic horizontal sign has a new life; tradition and modern living meet to generate a refined and transverse whole, warm and highly appealing. New steel handles give an archetypal sign and are also elaborate in the joint detail, illustrating the scanning of doors with graphic and material input.

ACCESSORIES
Inside and outside the coordination of colours and materials is predominant, from the pull-out baskets, to the opening mechanisms to the container accessories, the same theme connects each proposal . Quality is perceived throughout.

MATERIALS AND FINISHES
“Tone sur tone” or in complete contrast, monochromes enhanced by the surfaces: these introduce new materials or illustrate the updated finishes of horizontal or vertical surfaces leading to the creation of new aesthetic combinations.

PROFILI PROFESSIONALI DESIGNER

PAOLO NAVAwas born in Seregno in 1943, he graduated in Architecture in Milan and completed his training in England, working with industrial design studios. In 1972 he founded the Citterio - Nava studio with Antonio Citterio. Since 1982 Paolo Nava has worked independently as a designer.
With the use of new concepts, technologies and materials he tries to find a dialogue between his own poetic point of view and concrete industrial and production requirements. He is frequently invited to give speeches and lectures in various countries. In the course of his career he has won many prestigious international design awards.
Since 1992 Studio Nava has worked with Binova cucine designing the models Prima, Town, Country, Profilo, Regula, Continua and Modus; some of these have received important awards:
2001     REGULA, selected by A.D.I. for the Compasso d’Oro 2001 and by I.D.O.T.
