PUSH OPEN THE DOOR: THE SUN IS INSIDE
Design from Wallonia and Brussels: 23 designers, design agencies and companies.
Paul Nougé, one of
one for the paradox. Push open the door: the sun is inside … This aphorism, which dates from 1925, strikes us as incredibly modern and relevant in more ways than one: 2009 looks set to be a difficult year, a year of recession. Creativity and Innovation, which are headlining the European programmes, are becoming a source of targets and hope. Can design, and its added value, offer a way out of the crisis, be used as a weapon against economic depression?
Nouge’s quip stirs us to action, the action of opening the door and crossing the threshold that separates us from light, heat, from a better a life, but also from creative freedom.
The word « inside » evokes a spiritual, individual and intimate universe, but also a world of domesticity. Our habitat is a microcosm where nature (the sun) takes root.
Rethinking our habitats, reinventing the object, the interface of our indoor life, is increasingly becoming the challenge of design in
This « flat country with its grey, grey sky » - in the words of Jacques Brel – compels us to take on board socio-climatological considerations : the importance of the indoors, which characterises the customs and rituals of this part of Europe, where the sun is more of an aspiration than anything else, wishful thinking rather than an everyday reality. This goes to explain why Belgians put so much care and attention into their domestic environment.
For the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2009, Wallonie-Bruxelles Design/Mode, under the umbrella heading of « les belges » (the Belgians), is celebrating this paradox by putting the spotlight on a specific attitude that is typical of design in this geographical area, the propensity, more so than elsewhere, to consider creativity as a beneficial « residence » and « inner » life as an essential stage in the construction of a better world, starting with our homes.
The designers and companies selected for this event once again demonstrate the diversity of the approaches, the symptom of a multicultural and often interdisciplinary fertility that has always been a staple of Belgian design.
Can design help to ward off the threat of recession? The policy of promoting and supporting designers and companies from the Walloon Region is a good example. Design is considered as a strategy to develop, enhance and reboost local industry, export and, therefore, international dialogue. 7 young designers at the Salone Satellite and 16 representatives from the Walloon and
