Faces of Earth - “We all share the same skies, but with different horizons.”
OTILIA ANDREI shows us the Faces of Earth in her latest exhibition of portraits. Andrei's work effortlessly communicates the unique experience of each face she has captured. The lines of one man's face echo the furrows of the desert landscape he inhabits. The freckles on a boy's skin remind us of his innocence juxtaposed against the gravity of his expression, yet they also connote the brightness of the European sun. The dour look of a woman buried in fur coats allows us to share her experience of the northern cold. For OTILIA ANDREI, portraits are more than just faces – in her work, faces are transformed into physical imprints of the particular conditions that have defined her subjects' respective lives. With each image, we are drawn into the singular worlds of these individuals, arrested in our desire to find something in them to which we could relate our own struggles on this earth. In her endeavor to “immortalize the unseen for the naked eye,” to place her subjects under a special light so that we may see their exceptional qualities, OTILIA ANDREI also succeeds in showing us what we seek: our common humanity, evident in the often overlooked details of everyday life. Smiles convey delight everywhere, whether they come from a mother and infant in Africa or Buddhist monks in Cambodia. We see versions of ourselves in the man who reads a magazine sitting on a curb in Malaysia as well as in the wheelbarrow man in Laos, who probably needs his cellular phone as much as the executive in New York – or you and me, for that matter. It’s this dance between the universal and the particular that makes Otilia Andrei’s images captivating in a world where geographical and cultural lines are beginning to blur. In these Faces of Earth, one ultimately recognizes his own among them, and this sense of belonging is OTILIA ANDREI’s most precious gift to the beholder.
