Federico Delrosso “contaminates” with his seats

art, materials, Save the Children, the evocative cavedium of the Nhow Hotel...

Design is a thought that at times produces beneficial contaminations, above all when it succeeds in involving subjects different from the traditional players in the sector and disciplines seemingly distant from design.

Working on this principle, the architect Federico Delrosso devised the installation CONTAMINAZIONI (contaminations).

While working on the design of the Contamina seats,” says Federico Delrosso “I was already thinking about collaborating with an artist, the emotiveness of the designer who, like children, takes the design “game” very seriously, as well as the possibility of giving this project the function of a charity action. This process gave rise to the concept CONTAMINAZIONI which can be read in different ways.

- The 5 Contamina seats: the seats represent the cultural variety of the 5 continents. Their form derives from a truncated pyramid, an iconic, almost primordial line. I repeated the “seat-form” in different materials, colours, finishes, and from these variations I arrived at the potential also for non-conventional settings: an urban exterior, a green area…

- The playful exploration of the project: The voids and solids of the seats and the possibility of creating a series of mini-landscapes (almost three-dimensional puzzles) offer cues for playing with the object. So I thought of involving some children, subjects who more than any others have an experience of play as discovery and knowledge, to see how they would “read” these objects.

- Emotional space: places have a soul that architecture seeks to bring out, but it is the actions of people that make them tangible. The Cavedium of the Nhow Hotel is an interesting space from this point of view, because it is an absolutely vertical volume, which unites in a single glance the ground floor and the sky. I will use its walls in upward perspective to offer emotional inputs to visitors to the event.

- Contamination with art: the exploration of play and the space will take place through art. The seats will be co-protagonists of a performance imagined by Giovanni Manfredini, an artist with an international reputation, and will involve children, butterflies, emotions... Manfredini spoke to me about his performance in these words: “I thought about flight so as to intervene on earthly objects. I thought about dreams. About vision so as to intervene on /with the gaze of the children. A flight of butterflies ascending is beauty liberated in space. The gaze of children follows the flight and captures the poetry of freedom, of the air that is tinged with another air, of light that it is tinged with another light. New, eternal, for the pure and true gaze.”

- The charity action on behalf of Save the Children: This work can be considered complete only if it does not exclude less fortunate children. For this reason some pieces of the collection will be sold in a charity auction and all the takings will be donated to the Save the Children association.” Federico Delrosso

The image of the collection and the event are curated by Paola Romano.
