SHIKISHI - Small size calligraphies
Milan, April 22 to 26, 2009
At Salone degli Archi, Chiesa di S. Maria Incoronata
116, Corso Garibaldi
Opening hours: 4pm to 9pm, Sat. Sun. 10am to 9pm
The shikishi are a traditional, calligraphic and pictorial medium, quite in use in Japan in particular, but well-known and appreciated in China, too. Shikishi are small cards with a white or coloured background, often ink-decorated with the suminagashi technique or richly decorated with golden or silver dust, filaments and little squares, and mica to make the surface precious.
In 2008-2009 the cultural Association shodo.it organized an exhibition including over 70 works expressly carried out in this format by 31 Japanese, Chinese and European calligraphers.
Owing to their compact size, the calligraphies on shikishi stand out as more intimate works than those in larger sizes. Most suitable for private spaces, they can be easily and quickly replaced and alternated on the kakemono, for all occasions dictated by the elapsing of seasons, visits, feast days, etc. In the course of centuries this format has been used by many artists, especially for the execution of sumi-e paintings (a traditional ink-painting ) and calligraphic works in kana (Japanese syllabic writing), but also for the writing of Chinese texts or single scripts (kanji). In the twentieth century its use extended to all kinds of personal style and writing.
Due to the almost square size of the shikishi, if compared with the usual calligraphic formats, mostly rectangular and marked by verticality, the artists are required to work out compositions that are beyond the current patterns.
The exhibition organized by the cultural Association shodo.it displayed calligraphies made on the most popular kind of shikishi , called “dai shikishi”, measuring 24,2 x 27,2 cm.
With the support of the the Province of Milan, the Consulate General of Japan in Milan, and AISTUGIA (Italian Association for Japanese Studies).
