Plastic chrysalises

Wanda Romano presents her new line of jewel-sculptures at the Galleria Silvano Lodi & Due. From 23 to 30 April 2009, the gallery exhibits about 25 pieces of the artist’s production.
Romano, who lives and works in Madrid, is one of the most interesting representatives of today’s designer art. Her work has been exhibited at the Corachan y Delgado (Madrid), Plart (Naples), and at the castle Charles V in Lecce, at an exhibition dedicated to women’s creativity.
Romano’s new line is called Melting pot - a word indicating racial amalgamation and socio-cultural assimilation – which here stands for the seeming incompatibility of materials, such as PET (from plastic bottles), gemstones (opals, pearls, …) and precious metals like gold and silver. However, the artist points out that, “It is PET that makes my jewels precious”, thus emphasising the inventiveness of her creations, because “plastic and gold have the same value and represent the essence of my way of conceiving design, and therefore value is exclusively represented by ideas”.
For Romano, who trained at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera and has a dressmaker’s craftsmanship, jewels are precisely like this. She says, “My job combines art and design. All my pieces are unique and created to be worn. Despite their fragile look they are, in fact, extremely resistant.”
The exhibition Plastic chrysalises presents 10 pieces of the PURA PLASTICA series and 10 pieces of the MELTING POT series, including a necklace, brooches and rings. The title of the event clearly suggests how inert plastic materials like PET may actually metamorphose into new shapes and given new life. Like ethereal butterflies, Romano’s creations materialise into exceptionally beautiful shapes, colours and transparencies.
