Salone del Mobile Milan 2008 – Christofle Exhibition at the
GIO PONTI et CHRISTOFLE 1925-2008
A symbol of luxury and elegance, the house of Christofle has always been an innovator since its creation in 1830, with silver as its essence. Adorning the dining tables of princes and maharajahs, from aboard the Orient Express and transatlantic ocean liners to palaces and contemporary restaurants, Christofle has breathed its art of living into every era.
Christofle is distinct from its competitors in its desire to innovate, and has always been associated with the greatest creative people – celebrated artists, designers and architects, from Man Ray and Jean Cocteau to Roger Talon, Andree Putman and Martin Szekely, and now more recently Richard Hutten and Ora Ito. Each of these designers have always redefined for Christofle a sense of every-day luxury through their jewellery, silver trinkets for the person, the dining table, and the home. Through them, the elegance which characterizes the brand endures and reinvents itself each time.
Now Christofle’s object is to highlight its long association with the famous Italian architect Gio Ponti. For Christofle this is above all an opportunity to launch an exceptional collection of silverware that will be exhibited at the Milan Triennale during the international furniture fair in April 2008. This collection is made up of more than twenty-five silver pieces created by Gio Ponti between 1928 and 1978, some of which have been produced for the first time in 2008.
A legendary figure in 20th century architecture and design, Gio Ponti crossed paths many times with Christofle. Fifty years of friendship and artistic affinities bind the wonderful careers of the Italian architect and the grand French house of silver. From these associations were born many magnificent and poetic masterpieces in silver, some of which are little known. These first productions and reproductions exemplify Christofle’s innovative avant-garde spirit, combining a distinguished artistic heritage with the enduring trademark of always embracing modern trends.
With these exceptional reissues, the Triennale exhibition traces Ponti‘s art and style across three important periods of his work. The Christofle exhibition brings to light the active collaboration between Gio Ponti, Tony Bouilhet – heir and director at Christofle at the time- and the silversmith Lino Sabattini: “Reflets d’amitié” (Reflections of friendship), friendship which brought together the great talents of Paris and Milan.
