KITA. NATURA E TECNOLOGIA
The theme of the present exhibition is to explore the use of natural materials in our everyday life. I chose to focus on wood and combined its fine natural features with carbon fiber, a new lightweight material, and with aluminum, which can be recycled. The result is the exhibited furniture designed to be in harmony with our contemporary lifestyle.
I selected Sugi (Cryptomeria Japonica) from Kitayama, Kyoto, as a main material. The noble tree with its straight trunk is a real masterpiece of Nature. With a history of more than 600 years old, the wood was favored for building cha-shitsu tea houses and sukiya style structures because of its high quality. The wood is obtained not by simply felling naturally grown trees, but through the experienced work of skilled woodsmen, who follow the traditional cultivation steps of planting, weeding, branch cutting and so on, taking over 30 to 40 years until the trees are mature and ready.
As for the new material carbon fiber, it is a new generation material that is strong and yet lightweight and used for airplanes and spacecrafts.
I do hope that by my rendering of Kitayama Sugi, a gift of Nature's bounty carefully protected by the traditional Japanese skills, new innovative applications will be discovered in the near future.(Toshiyuki Kita)
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Kitayama, Kyoto is the mountainous area, in which the technique of planting and cultivating sugi trees (Cryptomeria Japonica) has been passed down for 600 years. The skilled woodmen live in the mountains and take care growing the trees from the planting to the felling in 30 to 40 years. The cycle must be followed lest the forests grow wild. The technique to grow the trees straight is passed on from generation to generation.
The wood is thoroughly dried in the sun to avoid warping. “Hashira” - the wood columns and pillars have been used as a symbol of Nature in traditional Japanese interiors. My idea is to create a chair out of Kitayama sugi to respect the tradition that is passed down there in Kitayama, Kyoto, and to reintroduce it in contemporary furnishings.
