The Luisa Delle Piane Gallery, in Via Giuseppe Giusti 24, presents CLEAN, a project by 5.5 designers in cooperation with Enkidoo.

In 2005, Cyril Delage, Virginie Fournier and Virginie Ecorce founded Enkidoo. Under this brand of furniture and accessories, with the guidance of a designer and by the use of particular techniques, they turn raw chestnut wood into refined objects.

In today’s digital world, analogy becomes a privilege; the improvement of the production processes make mistakes as rare as ever. The preciseness of objects destabilizes humans when compared to the imperfection of the latter.

Despite the great demand, these artisan objects cannot be produced in great series but in small quantities as the production processes are long and elaborate. The chunks of the three-to-four year old chestnut wood are accurately cut and consequently exsiccated, hand-straightened, moulded after a hot steam bath and finally assembled. The laboratory works like an alembic.

In early 2007, the 5.5 designers’ studio becomes acquainted with Enkidoo’s work and contacts the laboratory as its ideas are close to Cyril Delage’s way of thinking and her work. More specifically, in works such as “Réanim” and “Ouvriers – Designers”, mistakes are a quality; in other works, such as “Les Objets Ordinaires”, everyday objects acquire value.

During 2007 the two meet several times in the Limousin region. In these encounters they work in close contact with the materials by touching and experimenting them: this work gives birth to the idea of working with house-hold objects.

The idea is to give poetry to everyday objects people generally buy surely not because they are attracted by them; these objects are industrially made and are available in great quantities at low prices; these objects are easily disposable once they are damaged.

It may happen that during a walk in the woods someone finds a perfectly-long stick that helps the stroll; he may use it for the entire afternoon, then stuff it in the trunk of his car and leave it there for the following three days and then maybe he may place it in his garage; he may simply not want to throw it away.

The idea is to make objects that are exactly like that stick: objects we want to preserve just as they are in order for them to be authentic and naturally a part of their surroundings; these sticks acquire certain functions and consequently become:

A feather-duster: a stick for dusting

A trash can: a stick for picking up trash

A brush: a stick for scrubbing

A broom: a stick for brooming

A little Broom: a stick for collecting rubbish
