LE 5 GIORNATE DI MILANO START GIORNO 1

Piazza Duomo. The mall (Galleria Vittorio Emanuele). First stop that is a must, it’s time for work-out: the bull’s balls. The exercise is to do a full 360 spin with the left heel firmly planted on the poor animal’s much abused testicles. The Marino palace, the Poldi Pezzoli museum, then Montenapoleone, Spiga and del Gesù. Shopping and then taxi to the PAC, the pavilion of contemporary art. Nearby, inside the green municipal building (verde villa comunale), a kind of “I do-supermarket”, young Milanese couples are getting married at a frantic pace.

In the gardens you don’t want to miss a not guided tour of the architecture at the abandoned zoo. Try the thrill of touching the tree trunk used by his majesty the lion to trim his claws. As for the surroundings, keep an eye out for the natural history museum, the planetary and the exhibition space Spazio Oberdan.

BREAKFAST

SISSI – PIAZZA RISORGIMENTO
A worthwhile trip off the beaten track. Be it sweet or salty, here the breakfast is up to snuff. A place which over the years has managed to firmly remain on the peak of its popularity. Having barely entered, your mouth will nearly find itself in a state of drowning. Passing the bar, you’ll find an intimate small garden where to sit down at an open-air table.

COVA – VIA MONTENAPOLEONE, 8
Around for more than 180 years. And shows them with pride. Legend has it that this was the birthplace of the real panettone meneghino (panettone from Milan, a Christmas dessert). The tea room is among the more exclusive ones in Milan. As are its customers. A much appreciated break inside the most famous quadrangle in the world. Would you miss it?

PRANZO

LUINI – VIA SANTA RADEGONDA
Since 1948, this alley behind the Duomo is constantly clad in white and pink napkins stained with red. Since 1948, the shots around here are called by Luini, the king of the panzerotto (deep-fried mozzarella and tomato roll), served hot and juicy at all hours. Cheese and tomato in an Italian fast food.

ALISTAIR – VIA TADINO ANG. VIA CASTALDI
England brings her kitchen to our doorstep and amazes us. To drink: beers, either as chosen by you or as recommended with the food you order. Like for instance Oyster Stout, to be consumed with oysters and spicy sausage. Minimalist in the likeable sense of the word, elegant and a thrill for the taste buds no matter the age or the wallet.

APERITIVO

NOTTINGHAM FOREST – VIALE PIAVE 1
Tropical jungle-style interior decoration. An mystifying sensation. Like the cocktails. Study with calm the drink list, then discover together with the bartender his thousand and one specialities. Few but tasty eatables in favour of extremely potent potables. Warning: after only a short while in this place, you might start believing yourself to be Hemingway or Mailer or other such characters.

DIANA LOUNGE BAR – VIALE PIAVE
Get inside this old and very important Milan hotel. Pass the reception, having a look at the technical drawing that hangs there, and enter the bar area. On the other side of the glass wall an impressive internal garden unravels. Full of hidden angles, unexpected hide-outs and sparkling fountains. Always full, better to book ahead to ensure a table.

CENA

TRATTORIA DEL NUOVO MACELLO
Slightly off the main road, something that will eliminate some of the ever-present Milanese parking problem. Situated right next to the the old municipal butcher (nuovo macello means new butcher), this restaurant has made itself a name that connotes quality and innovation, not to mention a cooking that leaves no one hungry.

CHANDELIER
It’s the interior design that does it all. You don’t come here neither to drink nor to eat. You come here to respire the atmosphere created by the owners and to enjoy a full night out. Start by laying down on/in one of the huge thrones, then dinner by the candle-light of medieval chandeliers.
